Be More Aggressive: What We Really Mean

There are a few terms that get thrown around the field on game day by players, parents, and, most importantly, coaches that I’m not sure we fully understand or a used properly. One term, in particular, is often used without context or clarification and can be interpreted in a thousand different ways depending on the player hearing it. The term is

           aggression

           .

Aggression is a word used game in and game out, and at practices all around, but what does it actually mean? If I say, “Be more aggressive,” or “You’re not being aggressive enough,” can you tell me exactly what I’m asking for? Do I want you to run faster, be more physical, get angry, yell more, or work harder (an idea I’ll leave for another day)? Am I looking for you to be more intimidating, threatening, forceful, or just more energetic? As you can see, the idea of aggression—or being aggressive—can be interpreted in various ways depending on the coach or player. It can even mean something different from one moment to the next.

Aggression, by definition, is actually a negative behavior that often disregards the well-being of others. Think about a dog acting aggressively. Do we see that as positive behavior? In fact, aggressive behavior is generally defined as any behavior, including verbal threats or physical actions, intended to harm or intimidate another person, animal, or object.

So, do we really want our players to be more aggressive? Or, when we ask players for more aggression, are we actually asking:

            Can you be more assertive?

            Can you be more decisive?

            Can you be more proactive?

What does it mean to be assertive as a player?

Assertive players display confidence, take initiative, and communicate effectively and respectfully with their teammates. A player who is assertive will do what needs to be done, take charge in game situations, and play with conviction and the desire to be the best version of themselves at all times. Assertive players compete with intensity and determination, but always within the laws of the game.

What does it mean to be more decisive?

Players who are decisive often control the game. This doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes or fail at times—it simply means they are able to make quick, confident, and effective decisions under pressure, without hesitation and without fear of making errors.

Being decisive is about taking in the information around you, making a decision based on that information, and executing it effectively through technical action. This could mean finding and delivering the proper pass or recovering defensively into the right space to block a shot or intercept a pass.

Players who master quick decision-making and effective execution tend to dictate the flow of the game, feel in control and confident, and can make things happen.

What does it mean to be more proactive?

Being proactive in a game is straightforward. It means being aware of what’s happening around you, anticipating situations, and taking initiative through action.

Being proactive starts in the brain: seeing the big picture quickly, understanding what is happening in the moment, anticipating what may or may not happen next, and then taking action accordingly.

Proactive players don’t wait to be told what to do—they are constantly active, especially mentally. They are always scanning the field, communicating, and planning before there is even a need for technical execution or physical performance.

Proactive players are problem solvers. They quickly recognize situations developing on the field and decisively address them. Being proactive means staying a step ahead, always playing on the front foot instead of simply reacting to what’s happening.

Words matter. As coaches, parents, and teammates, it’s important that we choose them carefully. Instead of asking players for more aggression, we should challenge them to be more assertive, decisive, and proactive. These qualities foster confident, intelligent, and skillful athletes who compete with intensity but also with respect—for the game, for their teammates, and for themselves. By shifting our language, we aren’t just creating better players; we are building better leaders, on and off the field.

A Return to Familiar Ground: Youth Soccer's 2026 Age Group Shift

The world of US youth soccer is preparing for a significant transition, with a shift back towards a seasonal year age group formation. Beginning with the 2026-2027 season, US Youth Soccer, alongside US Club Soccer and AYSO, will adopt a September 1 to August 31 cut-off date. This move marks a departure from the current birth-year registration system and a return to a structure that aligns closely with the academic calendar.

           Understanding the Change

For several years, US youth soccer operated under a birth-year registration system, aiming to align with international standards. However, after careful consideration and feedback from various stakeholders, a decision has been made to revert to a seasonal year format. The new cut-off date of September 1 to August 31 aims to:

            Align with School Calendars:

A primary motivation for this change is to enable players to participate in soccer alongside their classmates and school friends, enhancing the social aspect of the sport.

            Enhance Player Experience:

The organizations involved believe this adjustment will create a more enjoyable and cohesive experience for young athletes.

           Key Points to Note:

            Implementation Timeline:

The new registration parameters will take effect in August 2026.

The 2025-2026 season will remain under the current registration system.

            Flexibility:

While the age group formation will align with the school year, opportunities for players to "play up" with older age groups will still be available, allowing for flexibility in player development.

            Collaborative Effort:

This change is the result of a collaborative effort between US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO, demonstrating a commitment to prioritizing the needs of young players.

           Looking Ahead

As the 2026-2027 season approaches, clubs and leagues will be working to ensure a smooth transition for players and families. While adjustments will be necessary, the long-term goal is to create a more positive and engaging youth soccer environment.

This change represents a significant shift in the landscape of US youth soccer, and it will be important for everyone involved to stay informed as the transition unfolds.

Q & A with Hollye Anne Brinkley

Hollye Anne Brinkley was centerback and captain of the River City FC 2007 girls before moving on to play for Saint Louis Scott Gallagher ECNL-RL. Hollye spent her time at RCFC (formerly Liverpool FC IA - St. Louis & Webster Groves United) from the age of 8 before moving on at 16. During her time at the club the 2007 girls were Missouri President's Cup champions and Midwest Regional participants, Missouri State Cup Finalists, and had top 5 ranking in Missouri via GotSoccer.

Now a senior at Nerinx High School and committed to play soccer at Grinnell College next year, we asked Hollye about her experience at River City FC and how it helped shape her development as a player.

What was your overall experience like at RCFC (LFC, WGU)?

I had a really good overall experience. Even with all of the name switching and changes that were going on while I was at RC, I always felt like the coaches were still completely focused on making me the best soccer player I could be. With it being as small as it is, there was always a very tight-knit and caring culture. It was very personalized and I always really appreciated that. Growing up playing with River City helped me to improve so much as a soccer player but my confidence also skyrocketed during my time there. I really loved my teammates and my coaches, which made it hard to move on.

How did the coaches at the club contribute to your development?

Like I said, it was always very personalized. I started club soccer in 3rd or 4th grade and had a few different coaches during my time at RCFC, especially in my earlier years. But I came in not having a lot of technical skills and I wasn't very confident, and my coaches really met me where I was at. The focus was always on growth and improvement, not just on winning. I never got chewed out for making a mistake and every coach I had was so supportive which kept me loving soccer instead of getting burnt out.

Were there any specific coaches who had a significant impact on you, and why?

I was with Coach Daniel (Olstad) for most of my time at River City, probably about 5 years. His approach to coaching was so methodical. He had a reason and a purpose for everything. He really transformed my idea of soccer and helped me to understand it as a tactical and thoughtful game, rather than just kick and run. His dedication to our team was inspiring and pushed us to give our all.

Were there specific areas of your game that the club helped you improve?

I was with River City for my formative soccer years, so I honestly got better at everything during my time there. One specific example that comes to mind is learning to play the ball long and in the air. It took me a long time to figure out how to hit the ball just right to get it in the air and how to get it where I wanted it but because River City was such a safe place to experiment and make mistakes in practice (and sometimes in games!) I never felt like I was behind or failing at it and that really encouraged me to continue trying.

How did the club's training help you develop your tactical understanding of the game?

Like I said, Coach Daniel was a very methodical coach. Especially as we got older, we talked a lot about making the ball do the work and moving off the ball. During my time at River City, I really grasped that soccer is not a game that can be played with people standing around doing nothing. I learned that there was always something I could be doing to support my teammates and that lesson has served me very well.

After RCFC, where did you go to play?

I went to play with St. Louis Scott Gallagher ECNL-RL.

What specific skills or attributes do you believe you developed at the club that helped you move to a higher level?

I played a lot of different positions during my time at River City...my very first season I played forward and by my sophomore year of high school, I was firmly rooted as a centerback. However, even though my preferred position was on defense, I learned how to be versatile and play different positions. This flexibility allowed me to come into my high school team and my next club team as a player who was able to play a few different positions, not just centerback. It opened up different opportunities for me on different teams. I also believe that growing up in River City instilled in me the importance of recovering after making mistakes. It was never a big deal if you made a mistake, it was just important that you worked as hard as you could to make up for that mistake.

How did the club prepare you for the increased demands of higher-level competition?

Even though River City was a smaller club, Coach Daniel never shied away from pushing us to compete against higher level teams from larger clubs. We got a lot of opportunities to play really good, challenging teams and were better for it. He made sure that our team was consistently challenged and that we knew we could hold our own against the teams we were playing in our elite tournaments and league games. Because he was so confident in us challenging ourselves, that made us confident. Our team learned that we were just as good as the high level teams we were playing and because of this, I was able to go into new situations, like tryouts with tons of elite players, feeling confident that I was just as good as them, if not better.

What was the most important lesson you learned at the club that you carry with you to this day?

Coach Daniel used to say "Don't be sorry, be better". I always took that as a way of saying don't dwell on your mistakes, just make up for them and be better next time. I think the most important thing I learned at River City was to work as hard as I can to make up for my mistakes. Don't waste time saying sorry or feeling bad for yourself, just recover and fix it. I've brought that with me on every team I've been on and it applies outside of soccer too. It really changed my perspective.

Looking back, what advice would you give to younger players who aspire to move to a higher level?

This is much easier said than done, but just be confident in yourself. Trust in the work and time that you've put in and the skill that you have - they will show.

The Formula For Success

An equation for successful actions on the field.

           An equation for Successful Actions

There are countless scenarios that play out during a soccer game. Pass, shoot, dribble, turn, beat the defender, small touch, big touch, driven pass, lofted pass, press, hold the space, and on and on and on. In any given moment for individual players, not to mention the team, there are actions to made and there are countless actions that can be made in that single moment. So how does a player make an effective action. Math was never my thing but I have come up with pretty simple formula that will show how a player gets to an action on the field, the result of which could be positive or negative.

Forgive me if I am a little off on this equation. I am not a mathematician nor was I good at math when they started adding the alphabet next to numbers. My brain was a believer that those two things were distinctly different and should remain apart. Sort of like pickles and ice cream. To me they are both wonderful alone, but please don’t put them together.

           Here is the equation

           (A + D) + E = X or (Awareness + Decision Making) + Execution = Outcome of Action.

the outcome of the players action during a game is a direct result o

f their awareness or ability to see and take in the information around them and their ability to use that information to make a decision and execute that decision using their technical abilities. In the simplest example if a player wants to complete a pass in the game they need to use this formula by; first being aware of the space around them, the location of their teammates, and the location of the opposition. Next the player must decide on who to pass the ball to, where to pass the ball (into the space, to the feet of the player, the specific foot of the player and so on), and the weight (speed) of the pass. Once that decision is made the player must be able to execute that decision using the proper techniques for the given action. A players ability level in all three of these components will determine the range of actions that can be completed and the rate of success.

Let’s look at the formula’s components more in depth.

           Awareness

Awareness is for me the most critical component of the game. A player with good awareness of the field is capable of making a wider range of decisions then a player who does not. Even players who have high technical ability need high level awareness to be successful. A player can have all the skill in the world but if they can’t take in and use the information around them then they won’t be able to make and execute good decisions. A player who has a simpler skill set and ability to read situations and use information effectively will very often have a high rate of success on the field.

If you look at player A and Player B below the highlighted area shows their range of awareness. Obviously player A has a large area of awareness and thus can make more decisions than player B is capable of. Player A’s ability to see the bigger picture around them on the field will offer them a great chance of find a successful action.

In order to build awareness players must constantly practice taking in the information around them. As coaches we should be asking players to check their shoulders and scan the field even during the most basic of exercises. It is tough for young players but we need to help them to understand that the ball is only one piece of the puzzle in the game. Just watching the ball and where it goes creates a narrow scope of awareness. Being able to see the ball, and scan the field for space, teammates, and the opposition greatly broadens the player’s awareness.

Another way to build awareness is through communication. When players communicate with their teammates it helps to build awareness because one player may not be able to see what another sees at a given time. On field communication is critical to increase a players awareness of the game happening around them. A player may not know a defender is on their right side because they did not scan the field enough, but if a teammate let’s that player know there is a defender on the right then awareness has been increased through communication.

The best example I can think to give players when it comes to awareness is that it is like doing a research report for school. If I am going to do a report and I only have one piece of information than my report is not going to be very good. Instead if I spend time compiling a lot of information and then ask for assistance from a friend or teacher to see if I missed anything or if they have any more information to add I am going to end up with a much better report.

           Decision Making

Decision making is directly correlated to awareness. There is no arguing that. A player who has great awareness in the game will be more likely to make a good decision then a player who does not have good awareness. Decision making is a result of the player being able to take in the information around them and use that information to come up with a plan of action.

In the example below you see player A and player B in the same situation. Player A’s awareness of the field is limited and player B has very good awareness from consistently scanning the field, checking their shoulders and having good body position. Because player A does not have good awareness they do not know the defender is behind them and they choose to turn with the ball and end of losing it to the defender.

Player B though using their awareness is able to know the defender is behind them and make the decision to pass the ball the way they are facing to player C who is in space away from the opposition. Because player B is able to take in the all the information around them, they can use it to make the best possible decision, which leads to the action and best possible outcome based on their ability to execute the action.

           Example A

           Example B

           Execution

A player takes in the information, decides on an action, and now has to complete or execute that action. To do this, players need to build their technical ability. A high level of technical competence leads to an increased amount of available actions and an increased rate of success in those actions. The more tools you have more you can do and the more effective you can be. A carpenter can’t build a house with just a hammer.

An effective forward in a 1v1 situation will be able to use their awareness to gain information about the defenders speed, ability, body position, aggressiveness and support from opposition teammates, decide on a course of action such as looking to beat the defender, and then use speed, ball control, and various fakes or feints to execute that decision. A forward with a wider range of technical skill and creativity will be more successful in beating the defender then a forward with a basic dribbling skill set. Both forwards may make the same decision but one will have a higher rate of success because of their ability to execute their decision successfully.

Another example would be a midfielder A who can pass accurately over various distances with both feet on the ground or in the air versus midfielder B who can only pass on the ground with their right foot. The first player is able to make a wider range of passes and if they have good awareness will be able to make a wider range of decisions with more effective execution then the player who can only pass a short distance with one foot. Midfielder B may have good awareness and may decide the best pass is a longer one, but their inability to execute will lead to an unsuccessful action.

           The Outcome

As we already said the outcome of a players action is a result of adding together all three components, (A + D) + E = Outcome of Action. A player with strong ability in all three areas will likely have a higher rate of successful actions then a player with a high ability in two areas, and most definitely a higher rate of success than players who are lacking in two or all of the areas.

If you look at the top players in the men’s and women’s games at any position you will see this formula come into a very clear picture. Think about someone like Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City. De Bruyne has a high level of technical ability thus his ability to execute actions no matter then degree of difficulty is high. Not only that, he is a great decision maker due to his elite level of awareness on the field. Put the three together and you get a high rate of successful actions that make him a world class player. When you compare De Bruyne to your local semi-pro team players the difference in level does not just exist in the feet but it is also exists in the eyes and the brain.

           On The Field

As coaches we need to early age players enhance their abilities in all three components, awareness, decision making, and execution. We must create exercises and sessions that challenge players in all three areas as much as possible. This is critical at all ages. A players cognitive abilities (awareness and decision-making) are just as critical as their physical abilities (technique, speed, strength, fitness, etc). A player with good technical ability, superior physical qualities, but a lack of cognitive ability will not be as successful in the game of soccer as a player who has the same technical ability, lower physical qualities, but superior cognitive abilities.

The Circle of Control

Control What You Can, Forget What You Can't!

Too often in soccer and in life, we get bogged down worrying about things we have no control over. We stress, get angry, and maybe even lose sleep over things that we can do nothing to change. Along with that, we often lose sight and forget about the things we can control. As a young coach, and more importantly, a young person, I often found myself in spirals of worrying about things both on and off the field that I couldn't change, control, or do anything about. I wanted players to be a certain way. I wanted parents to act according to my beliefs, and, for crying out loud, I wanted it to never, ever rain. The same way of interacting with the world on the soccer field also permeated my day-to-day life. I was stressed by this, that, and the other thing, most of which I had zero control over, and quite frankly, didn't affect my immediate life. Then, a few years ago, I was introduced to

           THE CIRCLE OF CONTROL

during my USSF 'A' License course. Something so simple had a dramatic effect on my coaching and personal life.

If you aren't familiar with the Circle of Control, it is a way of prioritizing and visualizing what you have control over and what you do not, in an effort to decrease stress and focus energy in areas that you should be. There are different variations that include what you can control and what you can influence, but I simply break things down into two categories:

WHAT IS IN MY CONTROL and WHAT IS NOT IN MY CONTROL

           .

In the example below, is my circle of control as a coach. It's really quite simple, and once I see what it is I can and can't control, it allows me to focus my energy and attention on the things I have 100% control over. Within the circle that I can't control, there are certain items, like our club president and executive director, that I can have some influence over with communication, but ultimately, they and their decisions regarding the club are out of my control.

Players have a circle of control as well, and when they step outside that circle, their performance on the field usually suffers. When players start worrying about things they believe affect their performance, like referees, they are focusing on external factors that don't deserve their attention. What they need to do is focus on the only thing they have 100% control over:

           themselves!

Below is an example of a player's circle of control. You may or may not be able to add other items.

As parents, we all get caught up in the emotional roller coaster of watching our kids on game day or the hustle and bustle of trying to get them to practice. We fret about cancellations, traffic, and those people in the yellow shirts with a whistle and flags helping to facilitate our children's experience. We too often get lost in thinking about and complaining about the things we have literally zero control over.

As parents, if you really think about it, you have almost no control over your child's soccer experience other than helping them on that journey. You may have influence, but do you really have any control? If you are trying to control it all, is that really healthy, or are you losing valuable time just enjoying watching your child do something they love?

Here is an example of what my circle of control looks like as a parent with two players. Yours may or may not be different, but I challenge you to come up with one for yourself and see what you really have control over.

The Circle of Control is something that changed my mindset and how I viewed things both on and off the field. I think it has made me a better and more effective coach, and hopefully a better husband, father, and person. I have really transformed into a person who focuses on the things I can control and looks to do them to the best of my ability. As players and parents, I believe formulating your own circle of control can have a big effect on what your priorities are during your time as a player or soccer parent.

There Is No Need To Yell

Throughout my coaching career, I've never been a yeller. While I might raise my voice occasionally to address the entire team, and, particularly in my early years, I sometimes lost my composure over questionable calls (a behavior I've since learned to manage), these instances were rare. One thing I

           don't

do is yell at players. I've found it counterproductive, counterintuitive, and, frankly, it looks terrible to yell at a child playing a game. There are better and more productive ways to motivate that lead to better results in terms of long term development.

Am I demanding? Absolutely. Do I have expectations? Yes. However, I've learned that providing players with clear, concise, and valuable information yields far greater long-term developmental success than yelling ever could. Game knowledge, the ability to deliver quality practices, and connecting with players on a personal level while genuinely caring about their well-being have earned me more respect from players over the years.

Some parents have even asked why I don't yell more, with a few even requesting that I do so, believing their child responds well to it. I can explain precisely why I don't yell at players and why I believe it's wrong, especially in youth sports.

Yelling at players to motivate them reveals a lack of intrinsic motivation. These players rely on external motivators to perform at their best, hindering long-term development. Yelling triggers the amygdala's fear response, impairing clear thinking and information processing. Even if a player responds after being yelled at, the motivation is primarily to avoid further reprimands, a fear-based reaction known in psychology as positive punishment (the addition of a negative stimulus).

A more effective approach is demonstrating the correlation between choices and consequences. Instead of yelling, explain the benefits of desired actions. For example, instead of yelling at a player who fails to recover defensively, resulting in a goal, explain that failing to track their player will lead to more scoring opportunities for the opponent. Conversely, sprinting back will help prevent those chances. Consequences for consistently failing to meet expectations, such as reduced playing time, should also be clearly communicated.

Accountability is best maintained through clearly defined standards and expectations. When these are established and understood by everyone, there's no need for yelling. Simply state the unmet expectation and the corresponding consequence. For example, "You were a distraction during practice when you should have been listening, so you will not start the next game."

Leading by example is crucial. Even when frustrated, coaches should demonstrate emotional intelligence by calmly articulating their concerns. During challenging games, instead of yelling, focus on developing and communicating a plan to improve the situation, ensuring players understand the necessary adjustments and their rationale.

Yelling is unacceptable in most professions. No parent would suggest yelling as a helpful strategy to a teacher, dentist, or doctor. Imagine a parent saying, "Screaming at Billy will really help his reading," or "Berating Sally will make her floss," or "Yelling at my child in front of everyone is the best way to get them to eat more fruit." Such scenarios highlight the absurdity of using yelling as a motivational tactic.

While I strive for consistency, I'm not perfect, and there might be occasions when I raise my voice or even yell. However, I've learned that far more effective methods exist to maximize player performance, earn their respect, and guide their long-term development as both athletes and individuals. These include:

            Game Knowledge and Clear Communication:

Effectively conveying the who, what, where, why, and when of teaching is essential.

            A Positive Learning Environment:

Creating a space where players feel valued, respected, and challenged is paramount.

            Personal Connection:

Taking a genuine interest in players' lives beyond the sport fosters a connection that translates to increased effort and respect on the field. Simple conversations about favorite foods or school can make a significant difference, regardless of the player's age.

            Understanding Child Development:

Recognizing the specific needs of different age groups is crucial. For example, young children thrive on activity. Structuring practices that keep them engaged and moving minimizes boredom and behavioral issues.

            Positive Reinforcement:

As my first coaching instructor emphasized, "Catch them being good!" Praising positive actions, even if the outcome isn't perfect, is scientifically proven to yield better long-term results than any other method. Praise a good pass, a well-taken shot (even if it misses), or a good decision (even if it results in a turnover). Address the technical errors separately.

The use of positive reinforcement to shape behavior and desired actions was solidified by observing my wife's previous career as a marine mammal trainer. Trainers use positive reinforcement to shape animal behavior. Desired actions are rewarded, while undesired ones are simply ignored. This positive approach encourages the animals to perform behaviors willingly, knowing they'll be praised and rewarded.

(Don't tell the kids, but I treat them a lot like my wife used to treat the sea lions and seals!)

In conclusion, neither I nor any coach within our club will yell at your player. There are far more effective ways to encourage performance, learning, and development. Carlo Ancelotti, the current Real Madrid coach and the most successful coach in UEFA Champions League history (with five titles), provides a compelling example. In a recent book about his leadership, former players and staff consistently noted his calm demeanor, recounting only one or two instances of him yelling or expressing anger, and never on the field. If a coach of his caliber, working with players like Vinícius Júnior, Mbappé, and Bellingham, doesn't need to yell to achieve success, then I certainly don't need to yell to help your player develop and, most importantly, enjoy the game.

Developing Elite Players At RCFC

RCFC focuses on individual development while navigating the perceptions associated with being a small club.

River City FC has quietly established itself as a cornerstone in the development of young soccer talent. Despite being a small club compared to some of the youth soccer powerhouses in the St. Louis region, it's their unwavering commitment to individual player development that sets them apart. This focus, while rewarding, also presents unique challenges.

The club's philosophy is clear: nurture each player's potential to the fullest. This means providing dedicated high-level coaches and a supportive environment where young athletes can grow, learn and enjoy the process of development. The results speak for themselves, with a growing number of River City players making the jump to play in some of the top youth leagues and competitions in the nation.

According to technical director Daniel Olstad, “Over the years as players have grown and developed within the club, we have seen them move on to play with some of the top clubs in the area at the elite levels of youth soccer. We’ve had boys and girls move on to play in MLS Next, ECNL, Girls Academy, and US Youth Soccer National and Regional Leagues. We’ve even had two players involved in MLS Academy programs at STL City and Sporting KC. As a smaller club this is something we are very proud of.”

However, this success comes at a price. As players develop and move on to clubs with more resources in terms of access to higher level competitions, River City FC often finds itself as a stepping stone. Losing promising talent can be difficult, but the club views it as a testament to their development programs.

“While we want to see players reach the highest levels and we are proud when they move on to play in those elite environments it does create some difficulties for us. Having players leave obviously creates holes in our teams that can be difficult to fill from a numbers perspective. It can also create a dominio effect where if one player moves on we can see more from the same team do the same.” Olstad said.

“It is also difficult to get our teams to higher levels which creates a negative perception from the outside as there is a lot of focus on team success from the outside and our focus has never been on winning championships. It’s always been to develop players first and foremost,” continued Olstad. “At times it has been frustrating to be seen as what people say is a starter club, but we have sort of embraced that role to an extent and really tried to focus our energy on development over wins and losses. Our goal has always been to help players reach their highest potential and sometimes in order to do that they need to leave RCFC. If we have helped them move on to an environment that is going to help them, then we have done our job.”

River City’s ability to develop players challenges the perception that young players must start in a "big club" to reach the elite level. River City FC is proof that with the right environment, dedication, and support, talent can flourish anywhere.

Olstad is proud of what they have built at River City FC.

“We have a strong, dedicated, and talented coaching staff at RCFC. We have two US Soccer ‘A’ Licensed coaches. Our coaches have strong backgrounds at the youth, high school, and collegiate, and even international level as players and more importantly coaches. We have built an environment in the club that focuses on individual development while not over loading players and risking burnout. We get the players to take ownership of their journey and don’t put unrealistic expectations on them or their families in terms of time or energy. Our philosophy is quality over quantity in terms of what we do for players. Sometimes more, is not better.”

Ultimately, River City FC's clear focus on player development, coupled with a supportive environment, allows young players to achieve their full potential. While the challenges of player attrition are real, the club's unwavering commitment to its philosophy is paying dividends not only for the individuals who wear the River City jersey but for the entire soccer community.

The girls lost their first two games, 3-0 to Iowa Storm and 1-0 to Lee's Summit Legends, but bounced back to draw their final game 0-0 in a great performance against KC Athletics.

Overall, it was a very successful tournament for River City FC girls soccer. The U12 Girls Blue and U13 Girls Blue teams both reached the finals of their respective age groups, and all three teams put in some great performances. Congratulations to the girls and their coaches on a great tournament!

Summer is in full swing, and with it comes the launch of River City FC's highly anticipated Summer Soccer League. This instructional league caters to the youngest football enthusiasts, born in 2016 and 2017. The Tsunami, Wave, Rapids, and Whitecaps Kicked off the season with games on June 24 at the shire. Although the summer heat was in full effect the players worked hard and played with joy and passion displaying some great skill.

River City Summer Soccer League is a specially curated program designed to nurture and develop the skills of players who are just beginning their soccer journey. Aimed at children born in 2016 and 2017, the league provides a supportive and instructive environment where youngsters can explore the fundamentals of the game, foster their love for soccer, and build a strong foundation for future growth.

Academy Director Daniel Olstad said about the program, "The summer soccer league is the next evolution for our highly successful city kids program which we have been operating for a number of years. The summer soccer league gives the players a chance to learn new skills at and then test those skills in a competitive, stress free, enjoyable game environment. Based on what we have seen with the program in it's early stages we are planning to offer an expanded program similar to the summer soccer league during the fall, winter, & Spring for various age groups."

River City FC teams had an impressive showing at the 2023 Ozarks Coca-Cola Dr. Pepper Cup, which took place from April 15-16. Four teams represented the club: the 2009 boys, 2010 boys-blue, 2011 girls, and 2012 girls. Each team faced tough competition, but some came out on top while others fell short.

The 2012 girls were looking to defend their championship from the previous year, and they succeeded. They had a dominant showing, beating Sporting Springfield and Southwest Missouri Rush both 3-1 on Saturday. On Sunday, they faced their final group game against FC Arkansas and won 2-1. The girls then faced FC Arkansas again in the final Sunday afternoon, which resulted in a thrilling 3-3 tie in regulation time. However, the team remained resilient and won 4-1 in the shootout, securing their championship for the second year in a row.

The 2009 boys were finalists for the second year in a row, a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself. They had a strong showing on Saturday, beating United Soccer Academy 2-1 and Boonville Soccer Academy 9-0. On Sunday morning, they continued their winning streak with a 2-1 victory over Wichita United FC in the semi-final. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the championship, losing to Arkansas Rising SC 2-0 in the final Sunday afternoon.

The 2010 boys-blue team got off to a strong start on Saturday morning with a 4-1 win over Legends SC. However, they suffered a setback in the afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Impact City FC. On Sunday morning, they played to a scoreless draw with Legends SC NWA.

The 2011 girls, unfortunately, had a tough time in the tournament, dropping all three of their games against tough opponents in Alliance FC, Legends SC, and Missouri Rush. Although they did not come out on top, they gained valuable experience that will help them in their future matches.

Overall, the River City FC teams had a strong showing at the 2023 Ozarks Coca-Cola Dr. Pepper Cup. The 2009 boys and 2012 girls were notable standouts, with the boys securing a second consecutive finalist position and the girls successfully defending their championship. Congratulations to all the teams for their hard work and dedication in representing River City FC at this in Springfield.

The Warm Up

The Warm Up Is A Critical Piece of Match Day

It's match day! You have your game card printed, your player ids, and you are ready to go. the players are arriving and some seem excited to be there, some are sleepy, and some are talking about all the things they did the night before or are going to do later on in the day. As a coach your job is to get all of these different personalities ready to play so is your warm up going to do that.

The warm up is a critical piece to any game day routine. SO take an inventory of the warm up you have set out for your team and ask yourself these four critical questions:

Does the warm up get the team and individuals physically ready to play the game?

Does the warm up get the team and individuals mentally ready to play the game?

Does the warm up get the team and individual emotionally ready to play the game?

does the warm up get the team ready to play in the style we want them to play in all components of the game?

If the answer is to all these questions is yes, fantastic your are setting your team up for success. If you are not sure then it may be time to look at your warm up routine and start devising a new one.

Let's look at things a little more in depth.

Does the warm up get the team and individuals physically ready to play the game?

Physically readiness for the game is vital. This doesn't mean just a little stretching and a light run. being physically ready to play means breaking a sweat in the warm up and activating all the muscles in the players system that are required to play. the intensity of the warm up is critical. to light and players won't be ready and it will take actually playing in the game to warm up. To high of intensity and there is a risk for injury or pregame fatigue.

A good warm up routine to get players physically prepared will consist of good focused dynamic stretching followed by a good level of ball work that requires exertion but also allows for quality in repetition. An intensive small sided possession type game is also a good way to hit the physical readiness button as well as the other components we want to hit in the warm up.

Don't have your players needing to take the entire first half to get physically into the game. Make sure they are challenged physically in the warm up!

Does the warm up get the team and individuals mentally ready to play the game?

Sally has a birthday party this afternoon after the game. bobby is going to grandma's house when it is done. Frank and joe had a sleep over last night before the game. Jessica is a little late because mom needed to stop at starbucks for coffee and now she is upset she is late. when players show up there is a lot going on between their ears and i am sorry to say as much as we want them to be focused on the game as soon as they arrive, a very small percentage actually will be. It would be great if all players had that intrinsic motivation or focus but they don't. it is our role to get them mentally ready to play by building a warm up that requires and demands focus.

My general rule of thumb is to ask players to arrive 10-15 minutes before I actually want to start a warm up. This allows them to arrive, chat with their teammates and start to distance themselves from some of the outside events that are going on and start to bring them into focus. Giving that 10-15 minute cushion (which I don't tell parents about) allows for some late arrival without actually being late for the warm up in case there is a line at the starbucks.

Once it is time to start warm up it is important to bring the players in for a short pregame talk and always remind them that success in the game starts with a focused and intense warm up. The time for other conversations is over and we must be 100% dedicated to the task at hand. It is your job to maintain this focus and not let it deviate. Because of this it is important that the activities you select for the warm up are keeping players focused.

If the activities you are doing are too easy, or too slow in movement, players are easily going to lose focus and move off into other thoughts in their own brains but also in fooling around with each other. Those distractions are not going to have your team mentally ready to play. having lines in a warm is not a good thing so try to avoid them as they create the problems we just talked about.

The other side of the mental readiness coin is this. are your activities getting them ready for the mental demands of the game itself? Are the activities stimulating the need for good awareness with and without the ball? Are the activities demanding a good level of decision making? Are they challenging players to find space or control space defensively?

Take a look at your warm up. Is it built to demand focus from your players? Are they challenged to be game ready Mentally?

Does the warm up get the team and individual emotionally ready to play the game?

Soccer is game full of emotion and needs to be played with emotion as well. Players need to be emotionally ready to play and Finding the right balance in emotional readiness is vital for the game. If players are too nervous, have too much energy, and are too "amped" up that can be bad. On the opposite side if players are too low key, and seemingly uncaring, or unmoved by the game and competition that can be just as bad.

It is good for some players to have some nerves and for others to be not nervous at all. Each player is different but there is a good balance that is right to compete. A player that is overly nervous or overly energized emotionally may struggle in the initial part of the game because of the adrenaline that is going through their body. A player that seems to not have any excitement toward the game may struggle because of the energy of the players they are competing against. I am not saying that every player needs to be fired up and yelling and have the "eye of the tiger," but being to "low" is not a good thing.

As coaches it's our job to know the individuals of the team and their personalities so that we can help them be emotionally ready to compete. How to we keep them from being to nervous? How do we energize the ones who give off a vibe of not caring too much? Well, it's all in the warm up!

Look at your activities and progression. Do they help players get out their nervous energy? Do they get the team and individuals into the competitive mindset? Do the activities demand that players are invested in the process of preparation? Most importantly do you know the right words to say and the right way to say it to each individual and the team to get them all emotionally ready? Do you display passion that your players can look to for an example or are you so low on energy that it rubs off on the players in a negative way. Is your body language, tone of voice, and coaching style helping the players get ready for the game or is it putting them at a disadvantage before the whistle blows.

Getting players emotionally ready to play is more about us as coaches then just what activities we have set up. How we communicate with our voices and bodies will help players find their proper emotional readiness for the game. That line is different for each individual player. There isn't a one size fits all so we need to find the right ways through the activities and communication we deliver to get each player to their sweet spot emotionally.

does the warm up get the team ready to play in the style we want them to play in all components of the game?

at River City FC we want all our teams to play with energy in possession and out of possession. We want them to play good possession soccer with a focus on hurting teams as soon as possible by breaking lines of the opposition through penetration. Without the ball the expectation is that we press as individuals and a group so that the opposition can not be comfortable in possession and so that we can win the ball back as quickly as possible. If the ball isn't won back quickly then defensively we need to be organized and compact to deny penetration.

With that said, is your warm up getting your team ready to play in this style? Does your warm up have players ready to play in possession and be comfortable on the ball under pressure but also has them looking to break lines by playing through, around, or over the opposition? Does your warm up demand a transition moment if a ball is lost where players either need to retain possession or regain the ball quickly?

If we want our players to play a certain way our warm up should represent that playing style so that there is a seamless transition from warm up to expected behavior on the field. if you warm up is to have players stand in lines and pass back and forth then maybe there is a reason players aren't playing with the energy we want them to. it should then be expected behavior that when it comes time to closing down the ball defensively they are too slow to do so or if they need to create and find the right space for teammates to have support they are a step behind.

Help the players get ready to play in our style by ensuring you have activities planned that mimic that style and what the expectations are.

You may have a good warm up routine but make sure it checks all the boxes so that the team and players are ready to play. A good warm up routine is vital for players of all ages. Don't be afraid to change up your warm up routine until you feel you find the best one for your team. If you coach multiple teams then one warm up routine may not work for both teams based on the individuals involved.

Once you find a good routine that gets the players prepared and answers all four of those questions with a big yes, then stick to that routine. having a standard routine in warm ups helps the mental and emotional readiness factor, don't change things up just because. if you have to change something in a warm up have a good reason to do so as it will throw the players off.

Finally, don't be afraid to give the players ownership over the warm up in some ways. Let them and in fact encourage them to bring some music to warm up to or you bring it for them. Just make sure it is appropriate. I am talking about a speaker, not ear buds for individuals. this is a fun way to work through the emotional readiness side of the warm up and can also build a positive feeling around game time.

Remember that the game starts well in advance of the first whistle. Games a lot of times are won and lost in preparation so make sure you are preparing your team the best you can. As Benjamin franklin said "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."

A New Season Is Upon Us. 5 Tips for Parents on GameDay

The start of the league season is upon us with games kicking off this weekend. We are all; players, coaches and parents, excited. The weeks and practices leading up to the first games are always enjoyable and important, but we all know the players just want to get out on the field and play and compete.

Just like you, I am a parent, and I am excited to see my son and daughter out on the field doing something they love. Soccer is a way of life in our house. It is my career, it is on the tv religiously, I read about it, I live it and that had transferred onto my wife and kids. We are a soccer house through and through. We love and live the game. It is this time of year though that I am called to remind our club parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, and grandparents what the game is really about and how we should be on the sidelines.

           1. It’s A Game!

There is another team, a referee, and other fans. There are a dozen other games going on at the complex and the atmosphere around the facility can create a false sense of importance. I am not saying the games aren’t important in some way. We want the players to compete, work hard, and do their best but when it comes down to it this is a game being played by kids.

They may succeed on the field, or they may fail. They may win and they may lose (they can even tie). What is most important is whether they love being on the field playing the game. This is not life or death, and your child will not succeed or struggle in life based on the result of a game. The referee and a good call or not so good call will not determine the college or university your child attends and whether they become a lawyer or solve the climate crisis. This is a game and while we tend to put importance on these moments, they will more often than not mean very little in the grand scheme of life, except for the enjoyment and memories made.

           2. Let Us Coach!

As a parent or guardian, you drop your player off at practice multiple times a week and you trust us a coaches to work with your child. You trust us to help them improve and challenge them to be their best, both as individuals and as a team. And then game day comes.

Once that whistle blows to start the game too often everyone becomes a coach. That trust you had in us in those practices is gone and you start telling Johnny and Sally where to go, what to do, who to pass to, and dear god don’t pass it in front of the goal! What happened? Where did the trust you had in your child’s coach go?

While you may have played at a high level, or not at all, or you may have coached before, what your are doing is counterproductive to your player and the team and disrespectful to the coach. You may think you know what you are saying but if you have not sat in on practices or team talks then you do not know what the coach is asking your player to do at any moment. Because of this you could be giving you player and other players the wrong information and instruction that is the opposite of what the coach wants. This can be confusing for players and frustrating for coaches. So simply put, STOP!!!

For players, especially at a young age, they are always going to want to make their parent/guardian happy, so when you tell them what to do they are going to default to listening to you. Also, they don’t want to get in the car and listen to how they should have done x, y, or z during the game from mom or dad, so again they are going to do their best to listen to you and make sure you are happy. At that point as a coach I might as well not even be there. When you and I compete for your child focus and attention you will always win. So when you coach from the sideline you are taking away my authority on the field and your child’s willingness to listen to me and the instructions and advice I give.

Please do me and all coaches a favor, let us do the coaching.

           3. Referee!!!!

This one is very simple and straight forward. Leave the referee and their assistants alone. Without them your child wouldn’t be able to play. They are human and just like you, me, and your child, they are going to make mistakes. Their mistakes don’t give you the right to say a single word to them let alone berate their intelligence or question their ability to officiate the game. If you are so good at officiating, we are now in a constant shortage so please let me know and I can pass on all the information for refereeing courses to you so you can show us how it’s done.

Go back to #1 in this article and remind yourself this is just a game and will not determine my child’s future.

           4. Cheer them on!

At some point your child’s playing career is going to be over. Even if they are the one in a million that goes pro, at some point it ends. So take the time to cheer them on with passion. Encourage them, root for them, and give them extra energy through positivity and encouragement that they need. Bring a cow bell, bring a drum, paint your face. Have fun being a fan of your kid and the kids around them. They may say you are embarrassing but too bad. As a parent these moments are fleeting, and you can make them fun too. It’s game and you shouldn’t be on the sideline racked with stress. Take that stress and release it in a positive way by being your player’s and your team’s biggest fan.

           5. After The Game.

You know what kids love? Getting in the car after a game and being critiqued about their performance in the game they just finished. They love being told how they could have done better, or missed a chance to do this, or should have worked harder. It is super motivating and they look forward to those conversations.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am being very sarcastic.

I can tell you the general rule in our house for car rides home and soccer in general. If the kids don’t bring it up we aren’t talking about it. I am a USSF A Licensed coach which puts me in a pretty high echelon of knowing what I am talking about. There are plenty of times I see my kids do things on the field that I question in my head and would love to discuss with them but I know when we get in the car after the game the last thing they want is to discuss their shortcomings. Instead, we focus on the positives in their performances, and it always leads with the following statement:

“I loved watching you play today!”

This is always a true statement. I love watching them play and they should know it. Regardless of their performance, maybe they had a great game or maybe it was their worst, I love watching my kids play a game that means so much to me and taught me so much about life growing up. I love to see their passion, their effort, their joy, and even their despair in moments of struggle. I love to see them accept challenges, compete, be a teammate, and push themselves to succeed and learn to accept and work through failure.

Whatever we discuss after that statement is something in regard to the positives in their play in the game that day, unless they bring up something that happened that they want to discuss. I ask you to try this out and see the effect it has on your player and your relationship for the car ride home.

I wish everyone the best of luck this season. Enjoy the time on the field and play, coach, and cheer with passion. I have a lot more tips for game day but let’s leave it at these five for now. As parents you are part of our soccer village and what you do means so much to your player, their teammates, their team, and our club. Enjoy the time on the sideline watching your player. New Home For River City FC

After months of effort and behind the scenes work River City FC was able to open up our new home for our annual tryouts on June 12. The field, which has been nicknamed "The Shire," is located in Affton off Tesson Ferry road on Tesshire Drive. The Shire which will be used for most practices and programs, has bathroom facilities, equipment storage, office, and concession stand. The Shire is River City FC's second facility location along with The Groves which is located at The Groves Church on Big Bend in Webster Groves.

The field Space, which is fit for 1 11v11 field is being improved with the help of TruTurf. Truturf has been to the location multiple times through the spring and summer To Help Us create a high quality playing surface. Along with improvements to the building and field surface, RCFC also has a capital fundraising campaign in progress to install lights at the Shire. The club is confident lighting will be installed and operational in the early fall, although funds are still needing to be raised to assist in the project.

According to River City FC Executive Director Elijah Alford, "Having The Shire gives us a great new facility to call home. We have worked tirelessly over the years to not just find a space, but to find the right space that fit our current needs and our plans for the future. We have continued to grow organically through hard work and dedication to our principles and the addition of this facility shows the direction River City is heading.

Our next step is to add lighting to the field. While we are confident the project will be completed for use in the fall it is an expensive project and as a non-profit we need help in raising the necessary funds. We have a buy-a-brick fundraiser currently taking place and also welcome any donations, and possible sponsorships to help us offset the costs."
